SCHIP Funding Raises Tobacco Taxes

President Obama signed legislation on Wednesday, February 3, 2009 extending health insurance to millions of low-income children, ending a two-year Democratic effort to enact a bill that former president Bush had vetoed -- twice.

The House passed the State Children's Health Insurance Program -- known as S-CHIP -- on Wednesday afternoon by a vote of 290 to 135. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi commended it as "the beginning of the change that the American people voted for in the last election."

Our newly elected administration seems to be blind to the fact that even though four million children are expected to receive health care access, over 43 million hard working American families will fit the bill for this program. During his campaign, President Obama diligently promised that he would not raise taxes on Americans earning less than $250,000 per year. In less than two weeks into his presidency, we see one of the largest tax increases in U.S. history.

Please let this be a reminder that your vote does count. You can make a difference when it comes to getting things done in Washington. Be sure to cast your ballet in 2010 and remember that our politicians may say things that sound great on television. But when it comes to standing behind their promises, their actions do all the talking.

The federal increases in excise taxes:

  • Cigarettes: $6.10 More Per Carton

  • Large Cigars: Up to $0.40 Per Large Cigar

  • Little Cigars: $0.96 More Per Pack

  • Pipe Tobacco: $1.71 More Per Pound

  • RYO/MYO: $23.53 More Per Pound That's a 2,200% Increase!

  • Chewing Tobacco: $0.305 More Per Pound

  • Snuff: $0.915 More Per Pound

**It is important to note that these figures are in addition to the heavy state and federal taxation that already exist.

Consider including the following points in your message on the White House comment line:

    • Give your name, the city and state where you live, and your occupation if you are employed by a retailer, wholesaler or manufacturer in the tobacco industry. If you are an owner of a retail store or wholesale business, provide that information and indicate how many people you employ.

    • If you are concerned about the future of your business that sells tobacco products or your job, ask the President to be true to his word about saving and creating jobs rather than passing the single largest tax increase on a product in the history of the United States.

    • If you purchase tobacco products, let the President know how the large price increases on cigarettes and tobacco products will impact you.
