President
Obama signed legislation on Wednesday, February 3, 2009
extending health insurance to millions of low-income
children, ending a two-year Democratic effort to enact
a bill that former president Bush had vetoed -- twice.
The
House passed the State Children's Health Insurance Program
-- known as S-CHIP -- on Wednesday afternoon by a vote
of 290 to 135. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi commended
it as "the beginning of the change that the American
people voted for in the last election."
Our
newly elected administration seems to be blind to the
fact that even though four million children are expected
to receive health care access, over 43 million hard
working American families will fit the bill for this
program. During his campaign, President Obama diligently
promised that he would not raise taxes on Americans
earning less than $250,000 per year. In less than two
weeks into his presidency, we see one of the largest
tax increases in U.S. history.
Please
let this be a reminder that your vote does count. You
can make a difference when it comes to getting things
done in Washington. Be sure to cast your ballet in 2010
and remember that our politicians may say things that
sound great on television. But when it comes to standing
behind their promises, their actions do all the talking.
